Its mission is is understand substance abuse and addiction, as well as to develop successful treatments and prevention strategies. NIDA conducts its own research, supports independent research at universities and other institutions, and delivers education and training to therapists. The agency also works tightly with local organizations to address the public health effects of drug abuse.
